Aviation

For many years the Aviation industry has been seeing an unprecedented increase in the number of passengers taking to the skies. This has resulted in significant and regular requirements to make changes to the way that these passengers are managed. Every aspect of an airport’s design will have undergone some process change in recent years, and it is this incessant requirement to enlarge and improve that exposes aviation organisations to significant risk.

Leading organisations within the air travel industry have discovered they can reduce the risk from this business change using WITNESS simulation from Lanner Group.  Whatever the proposed area of change, WITNESS gives the power to model a working environment and simulate the implications of different business decisions.  As a result, the organisation always has the confidence that the best business solution has been found - before a financial commitment to change is made.

Many of the world’s aviation organisations have successfully utilised WITNESS to help improve their processes, including British Airways, BAA (including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead, Glasgow), Virgin Atlantic, Dusseldorf Airport, Air France, Madrid-Barajas Airport, Rome-Fiumicino Airport and AENA.

Lanner’s Aviation customers have reported a wide range of uses and quantifiable business benefits from using Lanner’s WITNESS simulation software, including:

• Check-in. WITNESS has been used to simulate passenger flow through the check-in area, focusing on quantifiable customer service measures e.g. the percentage of passengers queuing for more than a specified time.
• Security.  Models have simulated changes to personnel deployment and the effect on queuing of the introduction of additional electronic arches.
• Baggage Handling.  New baggage handling facilities and proposed conveyor systems have been simulated to test their performance against current traffic levels, as well as proposed future changes in schedules and aircraft sizes.
• Aircraft Parking.  The effectiveness of stand allocation rules, and the effect of alternative schedules and practices can be investigated.
• Parking and Transportation.  The design of logistics activities such as car parking facilities and shuttle vehicles has been optimised using simulation models.
• De-bottlenecking.  Models will reflect current practice, identifying bottlenecks which can then be removed with simulation.

These organisations also report improved confidence in decision making, better communication of recommendations and team integration, and faster buy-in to proposed changes.
